Wendy:
I am really in a quandry … I became veg in 1996 but am having a huge problem sticking to the plan. My ND has determined that not only am I gluten intolerant but soy, corn, nightshade veg, peanuts, apples and oranges. Also, caffeine, chocolate, any kind of sugar, (stevia seems to be ok) dairy and processed milks like rice or almond … (I make my own almond milk with my vita mix) … so I eat veggies, rice, beans, and fruit … but my fitness trainer insists I consume lots of protein especially after a workout … this seems impossible without adding cheese or something … any advice? Do I really need protein after a workout?
Thanks, Loretta
Hi Loretta,
Here’s a great response to your concern regarding protein from the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM):
“For a long time it was thought that athletes needed much more protein than other people. The truth is that athletes, even those who strength-train, need only slightly more protein, which is easily obtained in the larger servings athletes require for their higher caloric intake. Vegetarian diets are great for athletes…. As long as one is eating a variety of plant foods in sufficient quantity to maintain one’s weight, the body gets plenty of protein.”
How do you feel after consuming fruit sugar (i.e. dates, or other dried fruit)? This may be a way for you to enjoy sweet treats, without the processed sugar. I will send you a personal email as well. Thanks for your great questions!
